The aim of ‘Superstars’, the title track of AEVA’s latest EP, was to tell the story of “the paranoid decline of a DJ superstar”. Using unsettling textures and borderline terrifying sound manipulation, he achieves exactly that. From the first detuned, distorted notes, an anxious tone is created, with the slow build throughout helping it become more and more disturbed and intense right up until the final notes. At times, the unusual sound created is akin to Bon Iver, while the offbeat, experimental melody lines sound as though they could leap straight out of a 70s progressive rock track, showing AEVA’s ability to combine a huge amount of influential sounds in a single cohesive track. -Dan Peeke
